For the animal head I chose to do a hedgehog. Hedgehogs aren't my favorite animal, but I think they're adorable and I thought it would be a challenging but fun project. From sculpting this project I learned many things. I learned that adding even the smallest details to a piece can really make a difference. I used a clay tool to create the little quills on the back of the hedgehog by raising up little parts of the clay in rows. Even though it was a bunch of small details it still made a huge benefit to my piece. A new technique I learned used a sponge. In my picture of the hedgehog the quills were darker toward the head and lighter at the ends. I want to create that color change so I painted over the quills and then used a sponge to gently brush off the tops so it would be lighter. This piece in general I think was a success with the details and general shape of it, but if I could change anything I would have taken more time to paint the face. I would have either used different colors or make it neater.
This piece falls under clay relief. From doing this particular project I learned many different things including the different materials and technique you can use with clay. For example, I learned that you use a different kind of exacto knife and there many materials used to shave off, cut, or smooth out the clay. I also learned that there are different techniques to taking out the air bubbles, like throwing it on the ground a few times. Also, if you want to keep your piece moist for the next time that you use it, you can spray a little bit of water to preserve a bit of the softness for the next day. I didn't think this was my best work, but I thought the glaze itself was successful. For clay you can paint it with watercolor, acrylic, or glaze. I used glaze on mine and I really liked how the colors came out on mine. If I could re-do this project I would try and make it more neat and clearly show the details.
This piece falls under the section of cardboard. The main things I've learned from this project is that cardboard is a flexible material. It has many layers with different textures and offers a lot of ideas. For example, on my piece you can see different layers with different textures to give it a different effect. I also learned that for this material you need to use an exacto knife. This was my favorite mini project. I think it was successful, because it actually looked like a pineapple to me and it was inspired from Kevin Hart, one of my favorite comedians. He has a phrase "PINEAPPLE," and it was always a joke I thought was funny. I also think it was a success, because of the different textures and options I was able to pick from. If i were to change anything it would just be to try cutting different layers or creating different textures.
This piece falls under the section of a relief called "Styrogami." This is a kind of art that uses styrofoam. I learned a few things from this project. I learned that styrofoam is a material that you can't saw through, but you have to continuously cut lines into. I also learned that this material can be messy and little bits of the styrofoam will come out. This styrofoam Olaf is a piece that I think was successful, because even though it is simple, it shows the basics of styrofoam relief. The relief is shown in the eyes and mouth. Even though I did think this piece was a success, if given another chance I would try to think of ways to put more detail and relief in this piece.
