My final relief piece falls under the relief section. Since it was my final project I didn't want to use clay or material that I've used before so I decided to do relief in a book. It took a lot longer then I planned, but I learned many things about it. You have to use different tools for paper and you can't just take chunks out of it at a time. Relief work in a book usually requires you to cut out a page or a few pages at a time. It is also difficult to include small details in your piece which is why it took me so long. Since I used an exacto knife it was difficult to create rounded edges and so many parts of my piece are straight lines. I think this piece was successful because of the design and details added to it. On the back cover of the book it was white and so I painted that part black and wrote a quote on it almost to give it a chalkboard feeling. Then when I finished my trees I put lines on it so it would seem like bark. I shaded the back part of the owl to give it more depth and seem like a shadow and I painted over the trees so I could blend colors and not make it a typical tree. If I could do anything over it would be to be more prepared and have thought of some ideas before going along the way and improvising and maybe choosing an easier medium. However, even though I had some struggles I loved the way this project turned out, but I don't think I'll be using books for a project in a long time. |
